DANA REEVE 40'S

Lung Cancer And Non-Smokers
24
The death of Dana Reeve, the widow of Superman actor Christopher Reeve (profiled in November 2006 issue), highlights an alarming fact: women who don’t smoke are at far greater risk for the disease than their male counterparts.
25
Among men, only ten percent of lung cancers occur in non-smokers, compared with as much as 30 percent for women. Doctors are still probing this deadly gender gap, but hormones may play a role, says Dr James Stevenson of the Cancer Institute of New Jersey. “There is some evidence that oestrogen is involved in the development of lung cancer in both smoking and non-smoking women.”
26
Other risks factors for both sexes include exposure to tobacco, fumes, asbestos, air pollution and workplace toxins, or a family history of lung cancer. In Asia each year, more than 600,000 people develop lung cancer, where smoking is considered a major contributor. Readers Digest, July 2007.
