3. The problem:
Our 21st Century students are visual learners. They are raised with information and entertainment at their disposal at the click of a button, or swipe on a screen. The process of creation, self-engagement, and educational retention is getting lost.

4. During my four years of teaching English Language Arts and Reading to sophomore and middle school students, I have come across data proven results that visual learning does make a lasting impact!
The solution

5. What is visual learning?
Visual learning happens, when still and/or motion pictures are incorporated into curriculum lesson objectives. The intention is to provoke and/or create background knowledge.

7. DATA Results: What is a film hook?
A visual learning data analysis was conducted with my 6th grade first and third period English Language Arts and Reading Classrooms. Only the third period class was given film hooks, which led to higher data on daily and exam assessments.
What is a film hook?
Film hooks are students viewing up to fifteen minutes of a movie, and being asked curriculum lesson objective level questions about what they just saw.
Film hook viewings and response questions occur weekly on Friday. My 6th grade third period English Language Arts and Reading class started film hooks on February 9, 2018.

Film hook questions range from the student’s ability to -
make inferences
make comparisons/contrasts
explain plot development
identify theme
identify point of view
make conclusions
explain character traits
explain filmmaker’s purpose
use context clues

10. How it works: Step 3 Step 2 Step 1
Students explain and draw their favorite part of the film hook.
Step 1
Students answer test formatted response questions.
Students watch up to fifteen minutes of Trolls for each film hook.

11. DATA Results
have proven two areas; which are experiences for my leadership role in curriculum:
Behavior management is a reduced issue.
Comprehension and retention are much stronger.

show a progression of improvement. The students understand:
unacceptable behavior leads to no film hook on Friday.
and develop an ability to comprehend and retain exam terminology.

At this point, film hooks are the strongest data proven models I have used in my English Language Arts and Reading classrooms.
