Bad Relations with Great Britain, the beginning of the end

Who ruled the colonies? Great Britain still ruled the colonies BUT
Great Britain was far away (3,000 miles away)

What happened? Colonists took more control of their governments

What did the colonists do?
Limit the power of the governors Passed laws so representatives had “power of the purse” (could control the money)

Things get worse… British government still helped protect the colonies
Britain sends soldiers to help during the French and Indian War Britain wanted the colonies to help pay a lot of money for the war Britain passed many new taxes for the colonies to pay

The colonists respond The colonists had no representatives in parliament The colonists could not have a say about the taxes They felt the taxes were unfair “No taxation without representation!” Opposite of what the Magna Carta said Colonists felt their rights were being taken away Many colonists refused to pay the taxes

Great Britain responds…
Great Britain’s governing body (Parliament) passed laws to punish the colonists

Uniting All the colonies became more and more upset with Great Britain and Parliament The colonies united to work together
