Objective: To describe the various disciplines that make up Social Studies Social Studies is a subject area that involves learning about Social Sciences Geography Humanities Civics The main reason for offering this subject is to help students develop the ability to make informed decisions and it covers many subject areas.

MAPS Objective: To identify and describe the various parts of a map
What is a Map? A map is a drawing showing how a piece of land would look if seen from above. Maps are drawn from information obtained from aerial photographs. www. Earth.google.com Maps are usually found in books called Atlases. People who draw maps are called cartographers. Long ago maps were drawn from information obtained by walking or sailing.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN A MAP AND A GLOBE Objective: define the differences and similarities between a map and globe Similarities Maps and globes often help you better understand what you read. Maps and globes are both “tools” which are used to help you answer questions about locations of countries and cities, oceans and rivers, mountains and deserts. Maps and globes also help you make comparisons and determine distances and directions between the places in the world.

Differences Globes are models, or small copies of the earth because the provide very accurate information. Looking at a globe is a lot like looking at appoint in outer space. On a globe, shapes and relative sizes are shown correctly. Directions and relative distances are also shown correctly. Globes are especially valuable tools for learning about the earth. Maps are drawings on flat surfaces of all or part of the earth. Maps can be folded or rolled. They can be carried and stored easily. A map can show the world so that it can be seen all at once, On a globe, only half the world can be seen at a time.

Is there more water or land on the earth? Which Continents appear in both views of the globe? What is the largest continent of the earth? How many oceans are there on the earth? What three oceans border North America?
