Develop transportation systems Would expand national business Railroads Erie Canal Cumberland Road Establish a protective tariff American exports declined after the Napoleonic Wars Would protect American made goods Could hurt consumers and southerners Resurrect the national bank Felt it kept the economy stable Federal funds went into the BUS instead of local banks

Missouri applying for statehood Issue of expansion of slavery in new territories Alabama had just been admitted as a slave state Tallmadge Amendment Attempt to limit expansion of slavery Fails in the Senate Compromise Outlawed slavery in all new territories north of the parallel 36˚30’ boundary Except Missouri All territories south of this line could become slave states

Foundation of our foreign policy for about 100 years Drafted by John Quincy Adams U.S. would not allow any colonization of countries in Latin America These used to be Spanish colonies Would allow us to influence and benefit from them Told European countries to stay out of the Western Hemisphere Would keep us safer from invasion

Andrew Jackson (Democratic Party) No candidate gets a majority of the electoral votes Andrew Jackson won the popular vote Adams gets chosen in the House Jackson accuses him of striking a “Corrupt Bargain” Henry Clay supported Adams in return for the Secretary of State position

6 Election of 1828 Democrats and Jackson rally strong support for him in the election Similar to modern campaigns Adams refused to heavily campaign Jackson’s wife targeted in campaign attacks Already had heart issues Dies shortly after the election Jackson wins by a wide margin A mob storms the White House after results announced
