Logic (logos) To appeal to logic, you should use:
definitions, data, statistics, test results, surveys, historical examples, literal language, logical reasoning

Effects of Logical Appeals
Potential Negative Effect: demands a high degree of audience attention and sometimes specialized knowledge; audience may be bored Potential Positive Effect: A rational, logical response (“Why, yes, that makes sense.”)

To make an emotional appeal:
Emotion (Pathos) PSA To make an emotional appeal: Use vivid and emotional language and images; include emotionally-loaded (highly connotative) language, figurative and creative language, emotional stories, perhaps even use fear, popularity, conformity, guilt

Effects of Emotional Appeals
Potential Positive Effect: Inspires an emotional response—which is the response most likely to create action. People act when they are moved in some way. Potential negative effect: May be forgotten quickly or backfire (nobody wants to be emotionally manipulated)

Developing Credibility (Ethos)
To develop credibility: Present information calmly, sincerely, relate to audience’s moral (and/or religious) ideas, use language appropriate to audience and subject and correct grammar

Effects of Developing Credibility
Potential Positive Effect: People will listen! Demonstrates respect for the audience; the audience develops trust in the speaker and is more likely to be influenced by both emotional and logical appeals Potential Negative Effect: might only appeal to particular group
