“ ‘This used to be a day in honor of the dead of World War One, but the living couldn’t keep their grubby hands off of it, wanted the glory of the dead for themselves. So typical, so typical. Any time anything of real dignity appears in this country, it’s torn to shreds and thrown to the mob” (Vonnegut 132). What is the importance of tradition?

Howard’s Poetry “Here lies Howard Campbell’s essence,
Freed from his body’s noisome nuisance. His body, empty, prowls the earth, Earning what a body’s worth. If his body and his essence remain apart, Burn his body, but spare this, his heart” (124) What was Howard trying to say with his final poem? Why take the time to write this if he never planned to see the trunk again?

Freedom “He had bitter things to say about freedom in America. He thought it was illusory” (150). Illusory – deceptive, misleading What freedoms truly exist within the US? Are any promised, but seem illusory?

Howard’s and Kraft’s Friendship
“ ‘I throw my lot in with you gladly, friend. Nothing else interests me. Nothing else attracts me in the least’” ( ). What has this friendship meant for these characters?

War Propaganda “‘People should be changed by world wars,’ I said, ‘else what are world wars for?’” (133). Create a propaganda poster related to the above quote. This can be set in the Vonnegut novel or in the modern world. Requirements: Slogan Image Relative color scheme
