Defining Irony Based on the pictures that we have discussed, work with your group to formulate a STUDENT FRIENDLY definition of irony.
9
What is Irony? Irony is about expectations.
Irony: the opposite of what is expected. 3 kinds of irony Verbal Dramatic Situational
10
You are arguing with your mother, who reprimands you for making poor decisions at school. She tells you: “Since you are so smart, I’m gonna keep letting you make your great decisions and you can live with the lovely results.”
11
Verbal Irony A character says one thing but means the opposite
Also called sarcasm or being sarcastic. Examples: The locker room smells really good. Awesome! Another homework packet!
12
Have you ever seen a horror movie that has a killer on the loose
Have you ever seen a horror movie that has a killer on the loose? You, and the rest of the audience, know that the teenagers should not go walking in the woods late at night, but they think a midnight stroll would be romantic. Needless to say, the teens become the next victims.
13
Dramatic Irony When the reader understands more about the events of a story than a character. YOU know something that a character doesn’t. Example The audience can see Freddie Kruegar in the bushes waiting Jim and Sam, but they have no idea that they are about to get shanked! The teacher is bragging on Ronnie’s perfect essay, but the entire class knows that he cut and paste his paper from the internet.
14
You break a date with your girlfriend so you can go to the basketball game with your boys, but when you go to the concession stand at the game, you see your girl there with another guy.
15
Situational Irony When what actually happens is the opposite of what is expected. Something about the situation is completely unexpected. Example A teacher stops a student from running so that he won’t fall, and in the process, she falls. Karen studied all night for her test and came to class the next day tired, but ready, only to discover that the teacher postponed the text until next week.
