Content Introduction. Types of adrenergic drugs. Types of adrenergic receptor. Classification. Application of adrenergic drugs. References.
3
Adrenergic Drugs Drugs that produce effects similar to the stimulation of sympathetic nervous activity is known as sympathomimetics, adrenomimetics, adrenergic stimulants. For example = adrinaline, salbutamol, ephedrine etc. Those drugs that decrease sympathetic activity is known as sympatholytics, antiadrenergics, adrenergic blocking agents. for example = Phentolamine, Tolazoline.(1)
4
Types of Adrenergic Drugs 1.Direct sympathomimetics=> These drugs which directly as agonists on alpha and beta adrenoreceptors. For example= phenylephrine, methoxamine, salbutamol, isoprenaline etc. 2. Indirect Sympathomimetics=> They act by adrenergic neuron to release the noradrenaline. For Example= tyramine, amphetamine.(2)
5
3. Mixed action Sympathomimetics=> These are the drugs which will give action either directly or indirectly is known as mixed action adrenergic drugs For example= Ephedrine, Dopamine, mephentermine.(2)
6
Adrenergic Receptors Recepto r Sub- receptor Function of Receptor Alpha Recepto r Alpha- 1 Receptor Smooth muscle stimulation, salivation, adrenergic swea ting. Alpha- 2 Receptor Inhibition release of noradrenalin and activation of adenylate cyclase thus inhibit post synaptic response.
7
Adrenergic Receptors Recepto r Sub-receptorFunction of Receptor Beta Recepto r Beta-1 Receptor Cardiac stimulation and lipolysis. Beta-2 Receptor Smooth muscle relaxation.
8
Classification of Adrenergic Drugs On the bases of structure these drugs are classified as follows:- 1.Phenylethanolami ne derivatives 2. Imidazoline derivatives
9
1.Phenylethanolamine Derivatives
10
2. Imidazoline Derivatives

Uses of Adrenergic Drugs 1.Norepinephrine is used in treatment of shock and hypotension. 2.Adrenaline is used in treatment of cardiac arrest, anaphylaxis and croup. 3.Isoprenaline is used in treatment of bradycardia and heart block. 4.Metaraminol is used in treatment of hypotension.(3)
12
5.Phenylephrine is used to treat nasal and sinus congestion.(4) 6.Oxymetazoline nasal spray is used to relieve nasal discomfort caused by colds, allergies, and hay fever.(5) 7.Naphazoline is used to relieve redness, itchy, watering eyes due to cold, allergies, or eye irritation.(6)
