1 An Introduction to Safeguarding Adults

5 Recognition: Who is an adult at risk?

Treat every suspicion/allegation/disclosure seriously Call the Police/Ambulance if the person is in danger Stay calm and listen carefully to what you are being told Reassure the person that you are taking what they say seriously Consider consent Tell your manager what has happened Make a written account of what you have seen/heard Give a brief overview of the presentation. 8 When responding: Don’t!
Appear shocked, horrified or angry Agree to keep secrets – explain to them you have to pass the information on Interrupt the person or ask leading questions (use TED: “Tell” - “Explain” - “Describe” Talk to the person alleged to have caused harm Give a brief overview of the presentation. 9 Reporting Ensure the immediate safety of the person (e.g. call police)

10 Reporting You should make an accurate record of what you have seen or heard at the time including: Date and time of the concern/incident Exactly what the person did/said, using their own words Describe the circumstances and identify anyone else who was there at the time Any injuries observed If you witnessed the incident, write down exactly what you saw The record should be factual, include the exact location Include the name (in full) printed and signature of the person recording the information Give a brief overview of the presentation. 11 Making Safeguarding Personal
Personalised approach. Safeguarding is led by a person This approach focuses on meaningful improvements rather than an process One question to ask: What outcome is wanted or desired?
