2 S= SPEAKER Who wrote, spoke, created the source
could be an individual, a group; could be unknown

3 O= OCCASION when and where did the source appear...CONTEXT date
book, newspaper, letter, etc.

4 A= AUDIENCE who was the speaker addressing or trying to reach?

5 P= PURPOSE what was the speaker’s goal in the source?
persuade, convince, state, describe, report, stir up emotions, etc.

6 S- SIGNIFICANCE how does the document answer the central question?
how will you be able to use this as evidence? support an argument? counter it?

7 TONE focus on the speaker look for BIAS, PERSPECTIVE, ATTITUDE
use it to evaluate the validity of the source
