S= SPEAKER Who wrote, spoke, created the source
could be an individual, a group; could be unknown

O= OCCASION when and where did the source appear...CONTEXT date
book, newspaper, letter, etc.

A= AUDIENCE who was the speaker addressing or trying to reach?

P= PURPOSE what was the speaker’s goal in the source?
persuade, convince, state, describe, report, stir up emotions, etc.

S- SIGNIFICANCE how does the document answer the central question?
how will you be able to use this as evidence? support an argument? counter it?

TONE focus on the speaker look for BIAS, PERSPECTIVE, ATTITUDE
use it to evaluate the validity of the source
