The Controversial Ambassador to England
Kennedy was born in 1888 to Irish immigrants in Boston Massachusetts. His father was active in politics. Harvard University. In 1914, Joseph married Rose Fitzgerald, the child of another powerful Boston family. investor in Wall Street and a motion picture executive in companies such as Paramount and RCA.In the early 1930s, he became more involved in politics. He raised money and campaigned for New York governor Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the 1932 Presidential election. In 1934, Kennedy was put in charge of the Securities and Exchange Commission,.He supported FDRユs re-election bid in 1936, writing Iユm for Roosevelt, a pamphlet that was directed against the wealthier critics of both him and the President. Kennedy defended against charges that he and Roosevelt had betrayed their class through their policies and choice of party affiliation. Kennedy was awarded for his work by being posted as Ambassador to England in These years represent the most controversial of Kennedyユs life. When he arrived in England, he became a close ally of Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain. He supported Chamberlainユs policy of appeasement towards Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. He was convinced that American participation in a European war would be contrary to national interests. He further believed that Germany could be contained and negotiated into a less assertive foreign policy. These views clashed significantly with Rooseveltユs beliefs. A year after Great Britain and Germany went to war, Kennedy was removed as Ambassador, effectively terminating any future political ambitions. The Second World War would be hard on Kennedy and his family. In 1944, his eldest son Joseph Jr. was killed flying over England. At the same time, his second oldest, John, was recuperating from the famous encounter between his PT boat and a Japanese destroyer in the Pacific.Once the war was over, Kennedy marshaled all of his political and business connections on behalf of his son Jack. Joseph was instrumental in Johnユs victories in the House elections of 1948 and 1950, as well as the 1952 Senate election when he went up against Republican senator Henry Cabot Lodge. Josephユs crowning achievement was Johnユs election to the Presidency in The nine years after that, however, were filled with almost as much tragedy as the Second World War era. John was assassinated in 1963, Robert (his third oldest) was assassinated in 1968, and the political ambitions of his fourth son, Edward, were curtailed after the fatality of his passenger in a car accident. Before his death, he suffered a crippling stroke. He died in 1969. America First Committee However Joe and John served once War declared
