Warm-Up 10/17/13 Some force occurs through transfer. An example is the force of the white cue ball on a colored pool ball. Sketch BEFORE and AFTER drawings of the pool ball scenario. Draw in arrows to show the magnitude (size) and the direction of the velocity for the object that is moving in the BEFORE and AFTER sketches.

Momentum = Mass x Velocity
Momentum is the product of an object’s mass and velocity. Objects with a large momentum are hard to stop! Ex) Semi truck vs. bicycle Momentum = Mass x Velocity

Practice Pick two of the following cars and imagine the momentum of each in a car crash. Remember: the larger the momentum, the harder it is to stop!

Conservation of Momentum
Law of Conservation of Momentum= if no net force acts on a system (2+ objects) then the total system does not change. Momentum is not gained or lost in collisions

Calculating Conservation
Momentum of cue ball = (mcb)(vcb) Momentum of yellow ball = (myb)(vyb) Conservation requires that the momentum before and after is the same! (mcb)(vcb) = (myb)(vyb)
