5 MGSE7.SP.1 Understand that statistics can be used to gain information about a population by examining a sample of the population; generalizations about a population from a sample are valid only if the sample is representative of that population. Understand that random sampling tends to produce representative samples and support valid inferences.

6 Learning goal #1: Students will be able to understand that statistics can be used to gather information about small and large populations by taking a sample and then determine if the survey question is valid or bias.

7 In statistics the term “population” takes on a slightly different meaning. The “population” in statistics includes all members of a defined group that we are studying or collecting information on for data driven decisions. A part of the population is called a sample

9 Instructional Activities:
Teacher will demonstrate how statistics can be used to gather information about a population by using a sample. Teacher will also discuss how survey questions can be considered valid or bias. Students will solve statistics problems from Go Math Workbook Module 10 p

10 Possible Assessment Questions:
Carl wants to find out the favorite foods of his students at his middle school. He asks the boys’ basketball team about their favorite foods. Jill wants to find out what type of art her fellow students enjoy most. She asks her classmates, “What is your favorite type of art”?
