How to decrease “relationship tension”
Build rapport (ask versus tell) Set expectations, establish roles, and then “get off the stage” Stay on “receive” longer Be empathetic Practice your setup, have a minimum of 3-4 opening probes to get the student talking (But 6-7 will probably get you farther) Avoid “you must” language (using “WE” – says “we’re in this together”) Verification Agreement: (personal note) - Spend time reviewing what you learned, then go to next steps (task list). What does this do? Reflects emotion (mix personal with professional) Presents you as a highly competent, organized person Acts as a verifier of what you’re going to do and what they’re going to do.
