2 Identifying Geometric Sequences
In a geometric sequence, the ratio of any term to the previous term is constant. The constant ratio is called the common ratio and is denoted by r. For example, in the geometric sequence 1, 2, 4, 8,… the common ratio is 2.

3 Example 1: Tell if the sequence below is geometric.
6, 12, 20, 30,… Find the ratios of consecutive terms. The ratios are not constant, so the sequence is not geometric.

4 Example 2: Tell if the sequence below is geometric.
256, 64, 16, 4,… Find the ratios of consecutive terms. The ratios are constant, so the sequence is geometric.

5 Geometric Sequence Example of geometric sequence:
A sequence of numbers is called a geometric sequence if the ratio of any two consecutive terms is constant. This ratio is called a common ratio r. Example of geometric sequence:
