1 The United States in World War II
Allied forces, led by the U.S. and the U.K., battled Axis powers for control of Europe and North Africa. In order to defeat Japan and end the war in the Pacific, the U.S. unleashed a terrible new weapon, the atomic bomb.

Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, HI. 2,403 Americans Killed, 1,178 injured Sunk or damaged 21 ships & 300 aircraft Why did Japan attack? Empire in Pacific U.S. cut oil supply because of Japanese aggression. Keep U.S. Navy out of Pacific region.

4 Retaking Europe Soviets turn back Nazis at Stalingrad.
Soviets lose over 1.1 million soldiers Allies force Nazis out of North Africa. D-Day (June 6, 1944) 3 million Americans, British, and Canadian troops sail to Northern France from England. American General Dwight Eisenhower leads all Allied military operations in Europe.

5 V-E Day (Victory in Europe)
April 30, 1945 Hitler commits suicide. (Body burned) Soviets and Americans driving through Germany from east and west towards Berlin. May 8, 1945 Germany surrenders unconditionally. Nuremberg Trials 24 surviving Nazi leaders put on trial. Charged with Crimes against Humanity, against peace, and war crimes. 12 of 24 sentenced to death. (200 lesser leaders convicted)

6 The Pacific War Japanese empire expands quickly after Pearl Harbor.
Island Hoping: U.S. navy ships marines from island to island attacking Japanese defenses. U.S. General Douglas MacArthur leads allied military in the Pacific. Battle of Midway: Turning point of the Pacific war where U.S. sink numerous Japanese aircraft carriers. Kamikaze: Suicide attacks by Japanese airplanes to destroy U.S. naval ships. Atomic Bombs August 6, 1945 first bomb dropped on Hiroshima August 9, 1945 second bomb dropped on Nagasaki V-J Day September 2, 1945 Japan unconditionally surrendered.
