3 History WHO? William Penn was the founder of Pennsylvania. WHY?
King Charles ll owed debt to the Penn Family. Penn wanted a haven for his fellow Quakers. Quakers problems in England

4 Government Mimicked the British parliament with two houses, The General Assembly and The Provincial Council. The Provincial Council acted as the Governor’s advisors. Ranged from 18 to 72 people The General Assembly was a democratically elected group of representatives for the people.

5 Economy The economy revolved around the Pennsylvanian agriculture
Wheat, corn, rye, hemp, and flax Natives were willing to trade their furs and jewelry for crops. Other contributions to the economy Manufacturing and natural resources Coal, sand, and gravel

6 Population/Demographics
Because of the Quakers belief in equality, everyone was welcomed to come to Pennsylvania African Americans By 1730, 4,000 slaves had been brought to Pennsylvania English The English Settlers in Pennsylvania were mostly Quakers Native Americans Owned the northwest third of the colony Other Immigrants included French, Jewish, Dutch, Scotch-Irish, Germans and Swedes

7 Culture Quaker Practices Pacifists - war and violence is inexcusable.
Abolitionists - believed in the abolition of practices, like the capital punishment and slavery. Equality - all people were equal, titles were not necessary. Taxes? Oaths? Quakers at a religious Meeting.

8 Religion Quakers were Protestant in predominantly Roman Catholic country, which led to discrimination and persecution. The Inner Light was a belief that a part of god is inside everyone and guides people to do the right thing. They integrated their religion into their daily life by living simple lives. The integration of the Inner Light into their lives promoted pacifism and equality.

9 Native American Relations
