COMPOSITION How the elements & principles of art are arranged in
an art or design work.

The Two Main Types of Balance You never want “unbalance”
Formal Balance – This balance uses symmetry to convey a feeling of seriousness and rigidity. Informal Balance – This balance uses asymmetry to convey a natural and casual composition that is balanced yet different

Symmetry A composition that can be divided in half, and will be balanced as if mirrored. Feels formal and serious.

Asymmetry A composition that cannot be divided equally, conveys an image more natural or casual.

The Rule of Thirds A type of Informal Balance that creates a structured and natural composition. Often used in photography but also used by many artists; place an object of importance on a 1/3 dividing line. Often times a “horizon line” is placed on a 1/3.

Emphasis A compositional strategy, where a focal point is created within the picture plane. Emphasis in an art/design work can be created in many different ways. Often called “leading the eye”, they are areas of visual dominance. A very “cheap” way to create emphasis… :^| 

How to “lead” the Eye? Size Color Contrast Placement Isolation Oddity

“Readability” is part of Composition Design

The FIRST Read the second Read the THIRD read
