Put automation to work for you
Profitably produce more jobs with Automatic In-Line Finishing— An IntegratedPLUS Solution Hello and thank you for joining me today. In the next 30 minutes or so, we’ll be talking about how Xerox’s Automatic In-Line Finishing solution can help print organizations like yours deal with some very real and pressing business issues. Let’s get started.
2
Print providers today face very real challenges.
It’s no surprise to any of us in the room today that the landscape of print jobs has changed. Large runs and long turnaround times have been replaced by the demand for shorter runs, today. Customers want the flexibility of printing what they need, when they need it—and are looking for a print provider to help. The resulting stress on traditional print operations is significant, leading many of our customers to ask questions like: How can we cost-effectively process a larger number of lower-dollar-value orders to maintain or grow revenue—especially when those orders have diverse stock, quantity, size and finishing requirements? How can we drive new sales, while avoiding the labor involved with increased order handling—especially across all those diverse, short-run jobs? And how can we make sure we’re ready to take advantage of growth opportunities while retaining focus on what matters most—our core business? Do these challenges sound familiar? The answer lies in finding new, effective ways to get jobs through your shop faster. One of the most promising ways to do this is by automating your workflow. With run lengths and turnarounds shorter than ever, print service providers have to find ways to go from producing a smaller number of large jobs per day to a large number of small, diverse jobs per day.
3
Today’s opportunities— an industry snapshot.
60% of print service providers state it’s a priority to automate their print production workflow. InfoTrends backs this notion as well. According to a recent survey, roughly 60 percent of print service providers are looking to automate some aspect of their operation. And for the same reasons you want to: to increase production. To free up staff so they can focus on other key aspects of your business. To get more jobs through your shop. Sounds great … and there are a lot of solutions out there, each of which deals with a different aspect of workflow automation. But which one is best for your shop? How do you efficiently integrate them with your operation—and with each other? And how much time will be taken away from focusing on your business as you try to figure it all out? Production Software Investment Outlook, InfoTrends, 2011 “Which of the following describes your print operation’s priority in automating print production workflow?” 3

Integration. Automation. Productivity. From start to finish.
The Xerox Automatic In-Line Finishing solution: Automates job submission processes— Accepts files from a variety of sources Starts production process automatically Automates pre-press processes— Preflights files Imposes jobs Selects and communicates with appropriate printer/finisher Automates production processes— Print server communication Print production In-line finishing The Xerox Automatic In-Line Finishing solution is made up of three key component areas that integrate seamlessly to produce and finish diverse jobs automatically: A front-end automation component, which automates job capture processes whether you receive jobs via a Web-to-Print solution, FTP, order entry or MIS system. A pre-press automation component that uses a centralized hub of powerful, automated software tools to manage file preparation and processing, as well as the orchestration and set up of multiple printers and in-line finishing devices And a production automation component that includes a variety of award-winning monochrome and color digital production systems appropriate for your specific requirements for operational productivity, media types and sizes, color managements needs, etc. These solutions also include automated in-line finishing for a range of diverse signature booklet applications. Now let’s get into some of the specifics within each of these three integrated component areas…
10
Automate job submission
No matter how they get to you, jobs can get started automatically. Jobs come in how you want—via FTP, order entry system, MIS system or Web-to- Print No-touch automation is built right in More jobs get into your shop with no added burden on your staff Automate job submission If there is one thing that is pretty common across all our print provider customers, it’s that how they receive jobs is highly varied. There is no one “right way”—everyone has their own system, or combination of systems, based on their unique customer types and preferences. That’s why we have built job capture flexibility into the Automatic In-Line Finishing solution. Regardless of whether jobs come in via FTP, order entry system, or Web-to-Print portal, they can be submitted into the production process without anyone in your shop having to touch the files. This provides a tremendous amount of value in the upstream portion of your production process, freeing up CSR time and letting you take on more work with less overhead. And if you are looking to update your current job submission process, we can work with you to select the right Integrated PLUS Solution—such as a Web-to-Print portal—to meet your requirements.

The automation to keep jobs flowing
The automation to keep jobs flowing. The intelligence to get them where they need to go. Xerox® FreeFlow® Process Manager Xerox® FreeFlow® Connect Ultimate Bindery Automate pre-press Eliminate intervention. All finishing information is captured and communicated to your entire supported digital fleet. The real advantage of our Automatic In-Line Finishing solution resides here, at the central management hub. This hub is made up of three key software solutions—essentially the brains behind the system—that work together to get files prepared and imposed while also coordinating the communication between the production components to ensure they are ready to receive and finish jobs according to customer requirements. This communication happens through electronic job ticketing, including industry-standard Job Definition Format (JDF) and Job Messaging Format (JMF). The first component of this management hub is Xerox FreeFlow Process Manager. It inspects each job and automatically selects the proper digital press/finisher configuration based on the job’s requirements. Let me say that again—automatically selects the right workflow for the job. Think about the impact that can have on your operation! Jobs are then converted to PDF and intelligently batched, routed, and prepared for the next step in the process. Xerox FreeFlow Connect then takes over—again, automatically—using adaptive imposition templates and print shop rules to finalize the job preparation. FreeFlow Connect also automates the selection of the appropriate printer and finisher based on job parameters. The final component of the management hub is Ultimate Bindery, which coordinates critical communications between the print server and the finisher. This ensures that jobs are released for printing and finishing when the entire system is set up and ready, eliminating finishing errors and significantly boosting productivity. This is true whether you are printing and finishing a few different types of jobs in a day or hundreds.
12
Produce more jobs across your entire Xerox digital production fleet.
Automate production And as you might guess from the name, the flexibility of the Automatic In-Line Finishing solution extends right through to the production component. Depending on your organization’s needs, you can incorporate one—or all—of the systems shown here to produce everything from monochrome applications right up to industry-leading digital color. (Note to presenter: customize with product-specific details based on your customer’s identified needs) And each system incorporates an in-line finishing device that has been optimized for signature booklet job productivity. What does that mean, exactly? This system can flexibly and productively print and finish booklets in diverse run lengths, finish sizes and stocks without manual intervention. The communication between the central pre-press hub and the finishers ensures that the right finisher setup is completed for each and every job before the file is sent to production, eliminating errors and rework and keeping work flowing smoothly around the clock. Jobs automatically print and finish. With no manual intervention, the next job is already underway. 12
13
Diverse quantities, stocks and sizes. One powerful automated solution.
Think about what I just said a minute ago and contrast it to your current processes. Picture your shop floor—CSRs dropping off job tickets to pre-press. Pre-press operators spending valuable time preflighting, editing, and imposing jobs. Print production staff taking over to set up equipment each time a new finishing requirement comes in, tossing wasted jobs and paper when things aren’t quite right and eating up valuable time. And no one ever quite having the extra time needed to figure out how to add more work to the process. Now let’s think about how the Automatic In-Line Finishing solution can help: Jobs are captured and entered into the system automatically, regardless of their complexity. No human intervention required. Pre-press tasks are automated, including imposition and communication with the in-line finishers so all setup is done automatically—and flawlessly—regardless of job diversity. Jobs are intelligently routed to the best digital printing solution, based on each job’s unique requirements and the current workload in your shop. Printing and finishing is completed automatically. All your operator needs to do is make sure paper is loaded, then bundle up completed jobs for delivery. Suddenly, producing more jobs becomes less of a burden and more of a real opportunity—an opportunity for profit and growth.
