3. Task This is a combined Humanities and Science CAT.
The assessment is a POSTER which will be completed in class ( 1 session ) on Friday.
You will have 2 sessions this week to investigate and plan the “science” section of the poster.

4. The Science Section
A biosphere is an enclosed environment – like a Terrarium
What if you had to live in a biosphere
How would you recycle waste water
Could you reuse URINE
Could you reuse solid HUMAN WASTE ( yep – POO!)

5. An Ethical Issue?
If you all went EWWWWWW! Then you have an ethical issue to answer
“ Could you eat food that was fertilized with your poo or wee?”
There are 2 ways to approach this question…

This is a personal opinion and you need to justify why you have this mindset.

What are the biological and medical issues of consuming food we fertilize with human waste

Is there a cleaning process
Any foods that can be fertilized using waste

8. What you need to do…
In preparation to complete poster you have 2 tasks.
Research using human waste as a fertilizer or water source ( the wheres and why’s )
Complete a Y – chart on the information you gather

10. Something to consider
“The short-term  benefits  of  wastewater  reuse  in  urban  agriculture  could  be  offset  by  the  health  and environmental  implications.  Wastewater composition varies according to its origins; domestic, hospital and industrial. Wastewater contains chemical pollutants such as heavy metals, pathogens and helminths, such as  roundworms, hookworms and guinea worm that threaten the  health  of humans as well as the environment. The worst-case situation occurs when untreated wastewater is used to irrigate vegetables or salad crops that are eaten raw.”
