2 MEDIA AND YOU AS A SABBATICAL
Student media is crucial to democracy and accountability Led by students → The voice of students Aware of different relationship structures Media is ultimately there to HELP not hinder.

5 OFFICER AND MEDIA DYNAMICS
As an officer you will have to put on many “hats”. Which one you wear depends on the circumstance. Issues between Media and Officers arise from the conflict between 2 of these hats, a student representative “hat” and a trustee “hat”. As a trustee you are there to ensure the reputation of the union is maintained, which is in direct conflict with the student representative angle of your role when dealing with student media. This issue is particularly prevalent if you oversee directly the media groups, and even more so when your role is also a position within media, being an Officer and Editor-in-Chief for example. How do you get around this?

6 CASE STUDIES In groups look at the case study provided and write down what next steps you will take. These are based on real cases, sent in by student media groups. Strengths (what are the strengths of your proposed actions) Weaknesses (what are the weaknesses of your proposed actions) Opportunities (what opportunities do you actions present to you) Consequences (what consequences would you consider using, if any, against a media outlet?)
