“ just because I'm old doesn't mean I'm vulnerable ”

BACKGROUND Being deemed to be vulnerable has a range of potential consequences, both to people living in the community and those admitted to hospital. Recognising vulnerability where it exists is vital, but inappropriate labeling of vulnerability can be harmful in itself. It is therefore necessary to understand vulnerability and what makes one believe that they themselves or others are vulnerable or not.
4
AIM To investigate and compare the views of older people that is those over the age of 65, both in community and hospital settings, to establish whether or not they believe they are vulnerable

FINDINGS From initial analysis, it appears that people over 65, living at home in the community do not see themselves as vulnerable for a variety of reasons …“ I certainly don’t feel vulnerable in any aspect, but I do know what vulnerable means. But vulnerable can mean different things to different people, obviously. I don’t think there is anything else that needs to be said on that.” …..“ I think vulnerability is not dependent on age anymore …..“I was talking about our mental and physical health being a sort of “armour” against vulnerability”, …..” the one situation doesn’t fit all and that is the thing that has been pointed out”
