3 Synthetic Phonic Teaching
A phoneme is the smallest unit of speech. • Synthetic phonics is the ability to convert a letter or letter group (phonemes) into sounds that are then blended together into a word. Anna Russell 2018

5 Building the foundations for reading and writing
Listening first! Speaking and listening skills are developed first. Children take part in listening games and activities in order that they can begin to ‘tune in’ to the sounds around them. Anna Russell 2018

We use the ‘Sound Button’ method to encourage blending for reading. This involves encouraging children to press the button printed under each letter as they say each sound. If they repeat this quickly they should soon begin to hear the whole word. Anna Russell 2018
