Objective: Increase background knowledge about the 1930s to deepen understanding before reading Of Mice and Men. Directions: 1. Get a sheet of blank copy paper. 2. Fold it in half, drawing a line in the crease. 3. In the top left, LARGELY write: “Before. . .” 4. You’re going to do a Brain Dump: * Imagine you could take out all the knowledge you have about the 1930s and dump it onto your paper. 5. Use the markers to draw a picture at the bottom to symbolize your existing knowledge about the 1930s. Maybe you’re like this… Or maybe you’re like this… Either way is perfectly OK.

To deepen your understanding of the setting, you’re going to participate in a Gallery Walk. What are people doing at this gallery? Gallery Walk Directions: Get 9 sticky notes. For the first picture, take time to carefully examine the picture and caption (if there is one). 3. Write your feelings, reflections, and observations about the picture and caption using a starter: 4. Place your sticky note on the wall near the picture you’re responding to. 5. Rotate to the next picture when you hear the timer, repeating the previous steps. Since I notice __, that must mean that __. It appears that __, so therefore, people must’ve __. There seems to be __, so logically, __ likely occurred.

On the RIGHT side of your paper at the top, LARGELY write, “AFTER the Gallery Walk. . . “ 3. Do another brain dump, now recalling your feelings, thoughts, and observations from your Gallery Walk. Write what you NOW know about the 1930s on the right side. 4. Use the markers to draw a picture to symbolize the knowledge you gained about the 1930s at the bottom right side.
