6 January 2003 Patent Statements Companies are urged to review and comply with the patent policy of IEEE with respect to the 2003 reaffirmation of An expert from IEEE SA Standards Board Bylaws – October 1999 … assurance shall be provided without coercion and prior to approval of the standard (or reaffirmation when a patent becomes known after initial approval of the standard). Terry Cole, AMD

7 January 2003 What Benefits Do We Get? One new document will replace five, available March 2003. ISO/IEC plans to use new document (first approval of b/d). New amendments can be approved by REVCOM without procedural hindrance related to reaffirmation/revision status until March 2005 MIB text compiles and published electronically. SDL updated (goal: no better or worse) and published electronically. PICS made into an electronic form and published electronically. We are not getting all possible corrections. Some things cannot be done as “reaffirmation.” I’ve collected a list of things we should fix in coming 2 year period. I will document and put into archive. Terry Cole, AMD

January 2003 What Next? A three step program will keep us in good shape: 1. Keep our eye on the ball. I urge those participating in the sponsor ballot recirculation to review comments and reaffirm as a very valuable specification within the wireless world. 2. Plan future amendments appropriately. All projects should be against the base document IEEE (reaff. 2003). 3. Get ready for spring Make plan in March for roll-up of each approved amendment ASAP, decide what to do about existing technical errors/reorganization Terry Cole, AMD
