1 Class Agenda TODAY’s PLAN: Today’s TaSK:
EQ: What causes Earth’s materials to change? LT: Develop and use models to obtain information about the rock cycle SC: To identify the 2 factors (Variables) that cause rock changes Complete the energy transfer rock cycle lab

2 Initial thoughts #3 1. How hot do you think a rock would need to be in order to melt? 2. Where does the heat come from for the rock to melt? 3. How does melting a rock change the rock into an igneous rock?

3 CLASS Discussion – How does melting change a rock into an igneous rock?
A. Where is sedimentary and Metamorphic rock in this picture? b. how can it change into igneous rock? c. What energy sources are causing heat in this system?

4 Day 3 Materials 1. Look over the materials on your table.
2. Is there any materials missing according to the list below? 3. Who is the team leader today? Metamorphic rock (from day 2) with aluminum foil (if you still have it) Hot plate with 200 mL of water in beaker Tongs 2 piece of aluminum foil (only add one if you still have one)

5 Procedures Insert picture of what to do with beaker YES Follow the directions exactly on the worksheet (except of the boiling water change shown). SAFETY IS CRITICAL!!!!!!! Always use tongs near a hot plate!!!! Never touch hot sugar!!!!!! REMEMBER: This is a test & counts as 50% of your grade NO Insert picture of what to NOT to do with hot plate

6 Procedure (Day 3) Finish part 4, then raise hand to check with teacher before moving onto part 2. Finish part 5, make sure all students record and clean up. Stay at your table when done and work on zooniverse if part 4 and 5 of worksheet is complete.

7 Heat Earth was once a molten ball of rock.
The earth’s interior still contains molten rock and metal. Heat inside the earth causes rocks to melt partially or completely.
