Saturday, 4 May 2019 WALT: Describe Air Quality in relation to their nature, impacts and the responses by individuals, groups and governments. Today Air Quality

Air Quality Mr Daly The nature of Air Quality
Saturday, 4 May 2019 The nature of Air Quality Air pollution is the accumulation of impurities in the air. Air quality becomes a problem when the extra pollutants in the air are poisonous or concentrated enough to affect life on Earth. Pollutants can have an unpleasant odour, irritate the senses, reduce visibility and damage property. They can even cause death.

Air Quality Mr Daly Things that affect Air Quality Motor Vehicles
Saturday, 4 May 2019 Things that affect Air Quality Motor Vehicles Motor Vehicles are the most significant source of Australia's air pollution Power Stations Coal fired Power Stations generate 93% of NSW’s energy and is a major source of air pollution Indoors Cigarette smoke, dust mites, moulds and pesticides are a major cause of illness in Australia

Mr Daly Air Quality Saturday, 4 May 2019 The responses by individuals, groups and governments to Air Quality Up until the 1990s, Australia had no national air quality standards. The National Environment Protection Measure (NEPM) for outdoor air quality now sets maximum concentrations. The standards are based on the need to protect human health. The NSW government now monitors Air Quality around the state. For Example;

What can we do to improve Air Quality?
Mr Daly What can we do to improve Air Quality? Improve public transport so it is convenient, safe, reliable and cheap Use some petrol taxes to subsidise improvements to public transport Restrict new housing developments if access to public transport is poor Provide more transit and bus lanes Encourage transport of freight by train Implement stricter emission controls for motor vehicles and industry Provide incentives for research into renewable energy technologies Provide financial incentives for householders to install solar hot-water heaters Use the `polluter pays' principle, whereby people pay for the pollution and waste they produce.
