1 Safe Crossings Insights from the Expressive Arts for Chaplains
Pediatric Chaplains Institute Intensive At the PCN National Conference April 30, :30 am to 4:30 pm

2 Professional Development through Self Development
The intensive will be focused on exploring the arts to inform our work as chaplains People are drawn into, and changed, by art as it reaches into the soul of the human existence in ways that move beyond words. Exploration of the expressive arts of music, drama, photography, and writing will allow participants to discover the breadth and depth of metaphor – likeness between disparate facets – that can help us be better chaplains. This intensive does not require any proficiency in the arts, but rather an openness and curiosity of how self and relationships may be inspired and transformed. The goal is to engage in self-reflective processes to aid the participant’s ability to accompany others, not develop specific “artistic” interventions.

3 Blessing the Space Between Us
Objectives To use lessons from the arts to inspire our spiritual care of others To use lessons from the arts to grow assessment skills using the “landscape” of the particular environment To use lessons from the arts to see and comprehend different perspectives when communication falters To use lessons from the arts to cultivate the chaplain’s imagination to improve options for connection and repair fractured relationships, e.g. when chasms form between patients/families and the care team Content will include narrative, drama/improvisation, music, storyforming, visual art/architecture, photography
