Sexual Reproduction and Genetic Variation
Lesson 43
2
Activator Answer the following questions in your Science Notebook
Why do we look different from our parents? Are there clones of the same organisms? Can you name any? Do clones have the same DNA or different DNA? Explain.
3
Sexual Reproduction Definition: Production of new living organisms by combining genetic information from two individuals of different sexes.
4
Sexual Reproduction and Genetic Variation
Sexual reproduction increases genetic variation in offspring Increases the genetic variability in species Ex. Families Unique
5
Sexual Reproduction and Genetic Variation
Requires two parents Two parents’ gametes come together form a full set of chromosomes. Create different genetic combinations for that trait. What are some different alleles we have discussed in class?
6
Asexual Type of reproduction by which offspring arise from a single organism It does not involve the fusion of gametes Clone of parent: Identical DNA
7
Asexual Reproduction and Genetic Variation
There is usually no variation from generation to generation in a species population Some diversity occurs through mutations
8
Which one is better? Generally, sexual reproduction is more conducive to driving evolution. More genetic diversity available for natural selection to work on evolution over time Evolution in asexuals typically happens very quickly after a sudden mutation. Ex. drug resistance in bacteria (MRSA)
