Question 7 Fill in each x-value and y-value in the table below to create a relation that is not a function x y x y 4 1 4 1 4 2 3 2 Students are asked to create a table that shows something that is not a function. In order to know what is not a function, students need to know what a function is. In order for something to be considered a function, the following needs to happen: Each x value goes to only 1 y value It will pass the vertical line test when graphed. (the vertical line test is where you draw vertical lines through the graph. If it passes through the graph one time, it passes. If it passes through the graph multiple times, it fails and is not a function) Since you are looking for things that are NOT functions, we are really looking for things where an x value will repeat and go to two or more different y values. Some answers to this would include: Having the same x value for all spaces and different y values Having x repeated at least twice, and going to two different y values I provided both examples for the students to see. In the first example, I am showing that x is all the same value (4). If you were to graph this, it would graph a vertical line at x = 4. This would not pass the vertical line test because it would pass through a lot of numbers. The other example I provided is just that 4 was repeated twice in a table, with different corresponding y values. This also shows not a function, because a value is repeated and will graph a vertical line. 4 cannot be equal to both 1 and 4 at the same time, to make a function. 4 3 2 3 4 4 4 4 4 5 1 5
