Our Vision: Who are we? Dumbarton Middle:
BCPS Office of Mathematics PreK-12 The middle school mathematics curriculum continues to Build the Foundation by capitalizing on students' strengths and interests to introduce them to how mathematics can be used as a tool and a language in the various STEM and Humanities fields. The high school mathematics curriculum provides time to Fortify the Foundation by solidifying students' readiness for post secondary mathematics courses and opportunities that rely on a strong understanding and application of mathematical concepts and skills. Dumbarton Middle: Develop a community of confident problem solvers who have an appreciation for mathematics and who grow as mathematicians. Source:

Graduation Requirements
Algebra 1 Graduation Requirements Pass Algebra 1 PARCC1 Current 8th graders will need a passing score of 725 Current 6th & 7th graders will need a passing score of 750 Enroll in a mathematics course in each year of high school2 three credits, including one with instruction in algebra aligned with the Maryland High School Assessment for algebra or one or more credits in subsequent mathematics courses for which algebra is a prerequisite, and one with instruction in geometry aligned with the content standards for geometry’ Take mathematics PARCC exam aligned with course enrollment in their 9th grade year. 1: 2:

Assigned, not scored, for practice
Homework Assigned, not scored, for practice Yes! We still assign homework. Math 6 → Mon & Weds GT 6 → preview reading & notes PreAlgebra → 3x a week Algebra 1 (GT7 and 8th grade) → 4-5x a week with graded assignments.
9
Implications for Scheduling
How do we make decisions on scheduling? Incoming 6th graders Based on 5th grade teacher recommendations Current students Current & previous MAP scores* Previous PARCC scores Student progress, reviewed twice during the school year Includes in-class assignments
10
Implications for Scheduling
7th Grade: PreAlgebra vs. Algebra 1 GT7: Algebra 1 Same course as 8th graders and 9th graders take PARCC PreAlgebra 7 “Accelerated” pace – covers 1.5 years of content in one year Emphasis on building capacity for algebraic thinking, proportional reasoning Additional Assistance elective offered: Students selected by 6th grade teachers; identified as strong in 6th grade but may benefit from additional support for rigor of 7th grade
11
Implications for Scheduling
8th Grade: Math 8, Algebra 1, Geometry GT8: Geometry Follows course progression per BCPS Successful completion of Algebra 1 in 7th grade Algebra 1 PARCC requirement fulfilled Opportunity to enroll for Advance Academics available* Math 8 Covers first unit of Algebra 1 Revisits statistics and geometry Emphasis on advancing algebraic thinking Preparation for success in Algebra 1 and beyond Algebra 1 readiness: MAP score 235 (+/-) or higher PARCC score of “3” or higher
