3 -U.S. Department of Education
The IEP creates an opportunity for teachers, parents, school administrators, related services personnel, and students (when appropriate) to work together to improve educational results for children with disabilities. 4 Purpose The definition from the US Dept of Ed.

5 Ultimate goal for EVERY child?
The ultimate goal of any educational program is to provide the student with the skills necessary to be maximally independently functioning within his natural environment. Boutot, E. Amanda. Autism Spectrum Disorders: Foundations, Characteristics, and Effective Strategies

6 “The ultimate goal of any educational program is to provide the student with the skills necessary to be maximally independently functioning within his natural environment.” – Amanda Bouto

7 Independence Are current IEP meetings facilitating student independence?

8 “What’s an accommodation?”
One of the reason I started doing student led IEP was I found out very few of my students even knew that they were in Special Ed. They did not know they had accommodations and none of their accommodations were being use in gen ed.

9 “What about their self-esteem?”
This can be a difficult one. How can we help our students and at the same time protect their feelings?
