How did the lives of African Americans improve during Reconstruction? The lives of African Americans improved in many ways during Reconstruction. After the Civil War the lives of African Americans improved dramatically due to changes in the United States during Reconstruction.

Very General! African Americans were no longer slaves because slavery was outlawed. More specific – addresses slavery by name. The 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution outlawed slavery so African Americans would no longer be subject to the horrible effects of slavery. Specific – vocab. Term, names, explanation

6 Sample The lives of African Americans improved during Reconstruction because when the 13th Amendment was passed it abolished slavery so they were free. Next the 14th Amendment was passed which said if you are born in the U.S. you’re a citizen. Then the 15th Amendment was passed which gave all men the right to vote & there was also the Freedmen’s Bureau which helped freed African Americans and poor whites. It helped them find jobs & took care of them and provided assistance to them.
