1 Lessons 7 & 8 Magnitude and Estimating Quantities Scientific Notation is indispensible in science. It is used to clearly display the magnitude of a measurement (How big? How small?). Very large numbers have positive powers of 10 Circumference of earth = 1,600,000,000in. = 1.6 x 109 Circumference of Human Hair = 0.008cm = 8 x10-3 Very small numbers (greater than 0, less than 1) have negative powers of 10 Scientific Notation: a single digit, whole number, times a power of ten.

2 Lessons 7 & 8 Magnitude and Estimating Quantities
Let M =118, Find the smallest power of 10 that will exceed M. Let’s practice writing numbers in scientific notation…… 3,500,000,000 = = 100,000,000,000 = =

3 The value of the ratio is....
Lessons 7 & 8 Magnitude and Estimating Quantities Let’s find out how many times greater the population of the state of New York is than the population of the city of New York. New York City = 8,336,697 (Round this to the millions) = 8,000,000 8 x 106 New York State = 19,570,261 (Round this to the millions) = 20,000,000 2 x 107 We can use a ratio to compare the two…. 2 x 107 2 8 107 106 = X 8 x 106 The population of the state is _____times that of the city. The value of the ratio is....

4 The value of the ratio is....
Lessons 7 & 8 Magnitude and Estimating Quantities A conservative estimate of the number of stars in the universe is 6x The average human can see about 3,000 stars on a clear night with the naked eye. Write a ratio comparison to determine about how many times more stars there are in the universe than what the naked eye can see. There are about _____________times more stars in the universe than the naked eye can see. The value of the ratio is....
