Frame of Reference Objects are moving. How the objects move depends on your Frame of Reference Comparison to another object Did you know that when you are sitting still you are moving at 1800 km/hr? How can you speed up? …slow down? Comparison to other objects Ex. Your body compared to the car Ex. A fly inside the car Ex. Your body compared to Earth

Stand Up… Take a paper, pencil, and a small object with you
Find a square on the floor to stand where nothing is in front of you for at least 7 squares. Then follow the directions as they are read aloud to you

Put the object in your square to mark your start.
Move 7 squares forward. Write down how far you have traveled and how far you are from your object. (Count how many squares.) Move backward 4 squares. Write down how far you have traveled and how far you are from your object. Move forward 2 squares. Move backward 5 more squares. You should be back at the beginning.

Distance – how far an object has traveled Displacement – how far an object is from its beginning point or its frame of reference

Distance and Displacement in Football
It’s 1st and 10 on the 40 yard line. This means the Home team needs 10 yards to get a first down… The quarterback gets sacked on the 34 yard line. Now it’s 2nd down on the 34 yard line. If the running back moves the ball 10 yards do they get a first down? Why or why not?

Compare your distance traveled and your displacement from home right now. Are they the same or different? Compare your distance traveled and displacement from home when you return home tonight.
