1.3 E Interactions Within Communities
Ecology 1.3 E Interactions Within Communities
2
Interactions Energy is stored in the chemical bonds of sugar
producers – organisms that use outside energy source (sun) to make energy rich molecules chemosynthesis – use chemicals to make energy
4
Interactions consumers – organisms that can’t make their own energy
Food chain – simple model of the feeding relationship in an ecosystem Symbiosis – a close relationship between species
6
Interactions Mutualism – both organisms benefit from each other (termites and protozoa) Commensalism – one organisms benefits while the other is unaffected (anemone & fish) Parasitism – one is benefited while the other is harmed (lamprey & shark)
9
Pilot fish swim along side a shark
10
Interactions Niche – requirements that an organism has for its survival (food, mate, shelter, avoid danger) Predator-Prey Relationship – predators limit the size of the prey population Cooperation – organisms help each other (schools of fish, flocks of geese)
