1 Bacteria

2 Bacteria Characteristics
Unicellular Prokaryote Can be an Autotroph or a Heterotroph

3 Shape of Bacteria Bacteria can be spiral, rod-shaped, or spherical.

4 Flagellum - a long whip-like structure that helps it to move
Bacteria moves with… Flagellum - a long whip-like structure that helps it to move Functions like a propeller and spins in place Can have one, none, or many flagella

5 Bacteria Growth In order to multiply, Bacteria need: Food Water
Warm temperatures

6 Exponential Growth of Bacteria
Bacteria doubles every generation, usually in just 20 minutes! When this exponential growth is graphed, it results in a “J” Curve 

7 Will Bacteria Multiply Forever?
NO! Eventually the food and water will run out and Bacteria will reach Carrying Capacity

8 Diseases caused by Bacteria
Strep Throat Meningitis Tuberculosis (“TB”) Lyme Disease Pneumonia Food Poisoning Ear Infection Dysentery Cholera Tetanus

9 Treatment of Bacterial Diseases
Antibiotic - a chemical that kills bacteria or slows their growth without harming body cells. Antibiotics only TREAT diseases caused by BACTERIA… Antibiotics cannot kill Viruses and cannot be used to treat viral diseases

10 Prevention of Bacterial Diseases
Wash your hands! Especially before eating. Eat healthy foods like fruits and vegetables to boost your immune system. Avoid close contact with infected people. Only take Antibiotics if medically necessary to avoid developing resistance to Antibiotics in the future.

11 Bacteria Growth Lab (Part 1)
Purpose: To observe the growth of bacteria on bread, as well as the importance of washing hands to prevent the growth and spread of bacteria. Set-Up: Today, we will start the lab by using 3 different slices of bread… 1) Bread with bacteria from hands that touched a cell phone 2) Bread with bacteria from hands that touched the door knob 3) Bread touched after thoroughly washing hands Lab Results: In 2 weeks, you will get back with your lab group and compare the results of the bacteria growth on the 3 slices of bread and finish the lab report.

12 Bacteria Growth Lab (Part 2)
Continue completing the second part of the lab. Replicate the growth of bacteria with the beans and complete the data table. Skip the first question - you will answer this in 2 weeks based on the bacteria growth on the slices of bread. Answer the rest of the lab analysis questions with your group and turn in your lab report to the tray.
