2 Key Skill Analyse methods used by individuals & groups with respect to conflicts & relative effectiveness

3 Your vote counts Most Australians over 18 are eligible to vote to elect governments at: Federal (Darren Chester) State & (Tim Bull) Local (EG Shire Council) This system means the community can pressure politicians (our elected representatives) to influence decision making. Which representative to pressure?

4 Interest groups Individuals and groups with similar values may form an interest group with the aim of promoting their views Eg Save Bastion Point, TWS, MOAC Single issue is formed in response to a particular concern cf ACF/TWS Government & their agencies are NOT interest groups

5 Government & their agencies
Governments and their agencies are not interest groups but they do gain support for environmental policies They can employ their own methods to influence public opinion Eg Brumbies & NSW NPWS Parks Victoria promoted Marine National Parks and continues to do so (see p 278)

6 Many and varied methods can be used to influence decision makers
Effectiveness depends on decision-making process Important to raise community awareness & support (= pressure on decision makers)

7 For smaller organisation
Which methods depends on the scale of the conflict and available resources Compare SBP to TWS Finance, time, morale….. Can be difficult to campaign against highly resourced corporations & governments David vs Goliath For smaller organisation
