Schematic Overview of a Mammalian and Fly Olfactory Epithelium
Left, olfactory epithelia (OE) of flies and mammals are partitioned into broad functional zones (I–VII). Right, both systems are amenable to extracellular physiological recordings. However, in the fly, olfactory sensory neurons (OSN) are compartmentalized into hair-like structures (sensilla) arrayed along the antennal surface in stereotyped locations.
