2 is the constant duty of believers.
The mortification of indwelling sin remaining in our mortal bodies, that it may not have life and power to bring forth the works or deeds of the flesh, is the constant duty of believers. Do you mortify; do you make it your daily work; be always at it while you live; cease not a day from this work; be killing sin or it will be killing you. (John Owen, Of Mortification, 1656)

3 12 So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh—
13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. (Romans 8:12-13)

4 Mortification of Sin 1. What does it mean? observations:
opposite of living according to the flesh equivalent to living according to the Spirit it is the work of the Spirit in which we participate it is an ongoing work

5 Mortification of Sin 1. What does it mean?
to cause the sinful effects in our bodies produced by the flesh to cease (actions, beliefs, desires, affections) cf. Col. 3:5-10 to constantly live out the “life” given us by the Spirit who resides in us – abounding in the fruit of the Spirit that is contrary to the flesh (Gal. 5:22-23)

6 Mortification of Sin 2. How is it accomplished?
Not by law but by faith – a life of faith in the gospel Get a clear sense of the guilt and evil of your sin Grasp anew the privileges and blessing of your new position in Christ Consider often the supply and fullness in Jesus to give you strength and deliverance
