1 Rights Respecting Schools

2 What’s all this rights stuff about?
UNCRC stands for the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. It’s a list of rights that all children, everywhere in the world, have.

3 What are these rights for?
The rights on the list are all the things that children and young people need to make sure that they are healthy, happy and safe

4 How many rights are there?
There are 54 articles in the list, and 42 of these are rights for children (the others are about how adults and governments should work together to make sure all children get all their rights

5 Adults and children need to respect these rights!
How do we do that? We need to talk to each other, using rights respecting language, to make sure these rights are being upheld and valued. For example Article 28 says I have a right to learn. How can I make sure that others learn?

6 Are these children receiving their rights?

7 So, what will we do next? There will be a meeting next week for the Children’s Rights steering group. These children are also your class representatives for the School Council, Eco Warriors and Recycling Officers. These children are to come to the nursery classroom for the meeting (time and day TBC). There will be a focus in class and at assemblies on children’s rights. Children’s rights will be displayed around the school and in your classes (Classroom Charters).

8 How will we see a difference in school?
“Help us understand that others have rights too and that we should help them because they may be in need and are just as important as us” (UNICEF).
