American Values Part I: Using the list of American values provided yesterday in class (Williams/Henslin/others), locate and analyze ten different advertisements that have been published in the United States within the past seventy-five years. For each advertisement, you will need to provide the following: A copy of the advertisement (minimized for size as needed, but still with any relevant textual elements legible). A “name” for the advertisement (for reference purposes in discussion). A brief description explaining the intended purpose of the advertisement (i.e. the purpose from the perspective of the advertiser who created it). A thoughtful analysis of how this advertisement speaks to one or more of the nineteen American values we have previously discussed in class. Be sure to use accurate terminology. If the advertisement seems to embody values counter to those on our list, explain why, and what purpose is served by opposing these norms/values/mores. *Your advertisements should come from across a broad spectrum of goods, services, organizations, etc… Meaning: do not turn in a Part I with ten ads relating only to food. Part II: Using any available news resources, locate two events in recent history (within the last ten years) which you believe speak to the values of Americans. For each, provide the source of the article, the name of the article, a summary of the event, and a clear identification/explanation of how this event illustrates a particular value or set of values common to the residents of the United States. (Be sure to highlight any pertinent vocabulary terms!) Hint: news magazines [rather than simple “news reporting” sites] such as Time, The Atlantic, The New Yorker, Newsweek… will have more detailed reports on major events which take place in the US.
