Term: Character A character is a person or animal that takes part in a literary work. Protagonist: The main character Antagonist: The character going against the protagonist

Term: Character Types Round Character: Shows many different traits—flaws as well as virtues. Vs. Flat Character: Shows only one trait

Character Motivation Dynamic Character: Develops, grows, and changes throughout the course of a story Vs. Static Character: Does not change

Term: Indirect Characterization
The writer gives clues to a character by presenting the character’s actions, words, thoughts, and by showing how others react to the character.

Term: Direct Characterization
When the writer (speaking through a narrator) explains or describes a character in the story directly.
