2 Anaphora – the repetition of words or phrases at the beginning of consecutive lines or sentences.
Ex: I will not be ignored; I will not be refused; I will not be minimized. Apostrophe – a figure of speech in which one directly addresses an absent or imaginary person, or some abstraction Ex: Oh, God! Help me overcome these challenges! Metonymy – substituting the name of one object for another object closely associated with it Ex: The pen is mightier than the sword.

3 Stichomythia - (“line talk”) a poetic device in which single lines of verse dialogue alternate between two characters in a ping pong fashion. (See your handout) Ex: Creon: That above all I must dispute with you. Oedipus: That above all I will not hear you deny. Synecdoche – using one part of an object to represent the entire object Ex: referring to a car as “wheels”
