P REDICTING P RODUCTS
2
S YNTHESIS Hint: Look for reactants that are both elements If one is a metal and the other is a nonmetal, combine the reactants using the Criss Cross method
3
T RY PREDICTING THE PRODUCTS OF THIS REACTION AND THE BALANCE : Na (s) + Cl 2 (g)
4
D ECOMPOSITION Hint: Look for a single reactant Break it into its elements
5
T RY PREDICTING THE PRODUCTS OF THIS REACTION AND THEN BALANCE : CaBr 2
6
C OMBUSTION Hint: The reactants will be oxygen and some hydrocarbon The products are always the same! (Carbon Dioxide and Water)
7
T RY PREDICTING THE PRODUCTS OF THIS COMBUSTION REACTION AND BALANCE C 2 H 14 + O 2
8
S INGLE R EPLACEMENT Hint: Look for a compound and a single element. The single element will replace the part of the compound that it is like. Metals replace metals (cationic), nonmetals replace nonmetals (anionic).
9
S INGLE R EPLACEMENT You must check the Activity Series to see if a single replacement reaction will actually occur. Elements higher on the list can bump out the elements below them. Use Criss Cross to write the formula of the new product
10
T RY PREDICTING THE PRODUCTS OF THIS SINGLE REPLACEMENT REACTION Mg + Al 2 (CO 3 ) 3
11
T RY PREDICTING THE PRODUCTS OF THIS SINGLE REPLACEMENT REACTION ZnCl 2 + Br 2
12
D OUBLE R EPLACEMENT Hint: Look for two compounds Elements switch partners so that there is still a nonmetal with a metal in each compound. Use Criss Cross when writing formulas for final products
13
D OUBLE R EPLACEMENT You must check the solubility chart to see if a double replacement reaction will occur. You must have at least one product that is not soluble (forms a solid precipitate in solution) or there is no reaction
14
D OUBLE R EPLACEMENT Solubility Not soluble = will not dissolve, forms a precipitate in solution Marked with (s) to show that the product is a solid Soluble = will dissolve in solution Marked with (aq) to show that the product is dissolved in water
15
P RETTY K ITTIES SINGING ABOUT BEING … SOLUBLE!
16
T RY PREDICTING THE PRODUCTS OF THIS DOUBLE REPLACEMENT REACTION CuSO 4 (aq) + CaCl 2(aq)
17
T RY PREDICTING THE PRODUCTS OF THIS DOUBLE REPLACEMENT REACTION NaNO 3 (aq) + KCl (aq)
18
T RY PREDICTING THE PRODUCTS OF THESE REACTIONS ( AND BALANCE THEM ) ___Li 2 O ___C 3 H 7 OH + ___O 2
19
T RY PREDICTING THE PRODUCTS OF THIS REACTIONS ( AND BALANCE IT ) ___NH 4 OH (aq) + ___Ca(NO 3 ) 2 (aq)
20
T RY PREDICTING THE PRODUCTS AND BALANCING ___K + ___F 2 ___FeNO 3 + ___Ag
21
T RY PREDICTING THE PRODUCTS AND BALANCING ___NaI + ___Cl 2 ___C 2 H 2 + ___O 2
22
T RY PREDICTING THE PRODUCTS AND BALANCING ___(NH 4 ) 3 PO 4 + ___Mg(NO 3 ) 2
23
T RY PREDICTING THE PRODUCTS AND BALANCING ___CaI + ___K
