The universal or central message of the story. In other words, the theme is the critical belief about life is the author trying to convey the writing.

We have been focusing on what makes an individual different than the rest!
In The Outsiders, one theme is individual identity. Ponyboy struggles to find himself outside of his group, the greasers.
It is important to always stay true to yourself & not let others shape or form your individual identity.
