Interpreting Rate of Change and Initial Value
M6L2 Interpreting Rate of Change and Initial Value
4
Module 6 Lesson 2 Outcome: Interpret the rate of change and initial value of a line in context.
5
M6L2 - Notes When a linear function is given by the equation of a line in the form y = mx + b, the rate of change is m and initial value is b. The rate of change of a linear function is the slope of the line it represents.
6
A positive rate of change indicates that a linear function is increasing.
A negative rate of change indicates that a linear function is decreasing. Given two lines each with a positive slope, the function represented by the steeper line has a greater rate of change. The initial value of a linear function is the value of the y-variable when the x value is zero.
