1 Biological control Introduced/Indicator Species
Topic 6 + 7 Biological control Introduced/Indicator Species

2 POS Environmental monitoring/management Endangered species Extinction

3 Biological Control A way of controlling pests, using their natural enemies, rather than chemical pesticides

4 Introduced species (Exotic)
Often harm the ecosystem, by upsetting the natural balance (invasive) Ex. Lack of natural predators Brought in: Accidentally Seeds, organisms on boats/airplanes This is why customs regulations are tight Intentionally as a biological control As food source

5 Africanized killer honey bees
They are “tougher” than normal honeybees, taking over hives and reproducing May take only 1 sting to be lethal

6 Zebra Mussels Great Lakes
They reduce the amount of food (algae) for other species

7 Cats, rabbits and foxes in Australia
Severely reduced small mammal populations

8 Bed bugs “don’t let the bed bugs bite” Hard to get rid of
Increased international travel

9 Weeds-purple loosestrife

10 Dandelions

11 Ox eye Daisy

12 Indicator Species Organisms that are sensitive to environmental change, that will die if the area is not healthy Ex. Amphibians (frogs, toads, salamanders) Problems: Acid rain, loss of habitat, pesticides, introduced species

13 Amphibians

14 Ecosystem Monitoring Scientists examine the environment Physically
mountains, lakes, cities, deforestation Environmentally climate, temperature, weather Chemically air, soil, water quality Biologically population and species of organisms

Pg 67#4, pg 78#1,2,4, pg 79 #4,10,11 Make a bar graph (computer) pg 71 Read “Unit at a Glance pg 84” Copy into your journal Unit Review Q’s

16 Biological control…Introduced species
Review DDT as chemical control Harming non-target organisms Discuss the impact of a biological control Ex. Introduction of birds to eat mosquitos

17 Changes in Ecosystems Extinction Endangered Threatened Extirpation
