1 Aim: Why are atoms considered to be the fundamental unit of matter?
All elements are composed of discrete particles called atoms • Each atom of an element is identical to every other atom of that element. Elements are composed of atoms which are identical in mass. • Atoms of one element are different than those of other elements. Elements differ from each other in that each element has atoms of a unique mass.

2 Aim: Why are atoms considered to be the fundamental unit of matter?
Atoms are the unit of chemical combination. They are never created, destroyed, or subdivided during chemical changes. They are indivisible. When atoms combine, they do so in simple whole number proportions. Compounds are formed and chemical changes occur with the union or separation of atoms.
